Contact Senator Richard Burr and Senator Thom Tillis Today and Request Increased CAPTA Funding Funding for the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) is pending in the US Senate. Please contact Senator Richard Burr and Senator Thom Tillis and ask them to INCREASE funding for CAPTA today. Increased funding will allow children to grow up safe, healthy, and ready to flourish! Enacted in 1974, CAPTA is the only federal program exclusively dedicated to the prevention, assessment, identification, and treatment of child abuse and neglect. It is the most significant piece of legislation addressing child abuse and neglect in our country, and legislation has not been reauthorized since 2010. CAPTA allots only $739,215 to NC for Community-Based Child Abuse Prevention, and it has been funded at this level for more than a decade. We need an increase in this funding to help children to grow up in safe, stable, and nurturing environments. It also focuses on intervention and treatment needed for children in our state. On May 20, 2019, the US House of Representatives unanimously passed Stronger CAPTA, a bipartisan response to combat the rising rates of child maltreatment occurring as the opioid crisis devastates families and communities across the country. Stronger CAPTA will: - Shift focus toward prevention by helping states build networks of cost-effective and locally driven services that prevent child abuse and strengthen families;
- Increase federal funding authorization levels;
- Support evidence-based strategies to treat and prevent child abuse and neglect; and
- Improve transparency, accountability, and focus on key priorities.
TAKE ACTION! CALL BOTH OF YOUR NORTH CAROLINA U.S. SENATORS TODAY, and ask them to join the fight against child abuse and increase funding for CAPTA! We need their support. The Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions (HELP) Committee must act on CAPTA now. Contact the Senate HELP Committee. The House of Representatives passed an increase in funding for CAPTA in their appropriations bills, but the Senate has yet to act. Please contact Senator Burr and Senator Tillis today and mobilize your network to do the same. Encourage them to support increased funds for the prevention of child abuse and neglect. |
